Behind the Design: Wedding Souvenir Mix CD Cover

Saturday, November 24th, 2007

cd-cover-pix.jpg

In the first part of How I Made The Mix CD Wedding Souvenir I laid out what went into the track selection. In this continuation, we will explore the thought and meaning behind the cover.

cd-cover-draft.jpg

There were actually two covers I did. The first one was a mouse-drawn illustration of me and my then fiancee’s face. Each situated at both sides of the cover, half shown. The words in the title is also mouse-drawn and linked with hears and stuff…I called it “Halves”.

Then the second one was a vector style illustration of a man and woman posing against each other. In a style reminiscent of sharp vector artworks in the 70s. Reminds me of the Eurythmics. I called it Backup Design TM

The first one was quickly shot down by me fiancee because the illustration that was her face reminded her of my ex-girlfriend. Not true, but not good.

So, backup design it is.

cd-cut2.jpgFrom there, I thought about the purpose of the mix CD. Which is to help the listeners feel that loving feeling hence “a reminder of love”.

cd-cut1.jpgSo i decided to make it tricky, the characters will be both of us and at the same time not both of us. So they have the same features of us but they appear blank. It is representative of the psychological exercise we do when we see a couple in love, we automatically projects ourselves in them.

cd-cut3.jpgAstute people will notice that there is two hearts. It is actually the hearts of both the man and woman perfectly aligned.

cd-cut4.jpg For the other items, a leafy flowery star is at the back, this represents the organic growth of love. The angel wings represent the best qualities of your mate and how you should be proud of them. The ray of light is just there for aesthetic purposes. These three are centered on the two hearts.

cd-cover2.jpg BACK COVER: The back cover list the title tracks and artist plus the best lyrics in the songs. This is meant to entice the reader to listen to the song. Otherwise they might not be inclined to listen to songs they don’t know.

So thats it! Some guests already expressed how great the CD was. I still have some lying around. State in the comment if you want one. :)

Thom Parker: Java Script Programming Seminar

Wednesday, November 14th, 2007

Besides having a name that sounds like a Marvel hero’s alter ego, Thom Parker is a world authority on Javascript, Founder and CEO of Windjack Solutions, Inc., a weathered software developer and an Adobe Development Board Specialist.

He’s here to give us natives a free seminar on javascript as well as showing a bunch of cool Adobe stuff. Javascript is one of the pillars of web development as it is one of the main components of web user interface and AJAX. So if picking a javascript expert’s brain is your idea of a nice afternoon then send your name, email address and number to felisresort@yahoo.com.

The seminar will be held in Felis Seminar Resort, a nice place beside the sea, located in Shanghai, Matina Aplaya, Davao City, with tel no. 297-0719 on November 16th, 3:00pm.

Here is Thom with Ted Padova who apparently enjoys being beheaded. I am sure Thom can code some advanced javascript that will put Ted’s head back.

Quick Time Updates

Monday, November 12th, 2007

Just a bunch of things to let you know I’m alive and yes, Im playing the Im-too-busy-blog card again. But with the internet connection at home knocked out by a freak accident involving a crane, posts and a really stupid driver, some dire consequences have arisen, one that bears heavily and will require monetary sacrifices. So excuse me, for feeling not too upbeat. Well, anyway on to the task at hand:

1. I’ve revisited my least favorite Radiohead album post Pablo Honey, Amnesiac. And surprise, surprise. its my favorite now.

2. my Eden review post is about 20% done, meaning all the pictures have been uploaded. All thats left is, to write past the introduction.

3. I have done Photoshop concepts of my impending redesign (call me Fickle Me Elmo). I love white too much.

4.  watch out for my 2nd behind the design article.

5. I am itching to watch NO COUNTRY FOR OLD MEN, cause Lions for Lambs sucks according to the Internetz, and believe what the Internetz tells you.

Open up for CSS designs.

Saturday, November 3rd, 2007
I like designing web pages. Designing might not be my strength, but i work hard for designs to every websites that i'm doing. Even though I can't design that good, but learning the CSS-way is far more very good. Using CSS in your websites can dramatically increase your website loading performance especially if you use external CSS files.

CSS represents the design layer of a page. If HTML is for structuring the content of a page, then CSS job is on how to present the content of the page. It provides how the HTML be displayed in your browser. The color, borders, font-sizes and its types can be defined in a block of style. Be it internal, inline or external styles, doesn't matter. But deciding on what to use will give you headache-free. Will save you hours of time for revamping multiple-paged websites.

A lot of good websites nowadays are really designed with CSS. CSS short for Cascading Style Sheets.

I won't be guiding you step-by-step on CSS here, but i will just lure you that using CSS in your websites has a lot of advantage especially using tableless-layouts. A lot of web developers and designers that i knew even have a hard time working with CSS. These guys really handles big projects but they don't consider using stylesheets.

But if you really wanted to learn CSS, do it. Don't care about those projects, care that you will learn the latest standards and recommended way of web developing. Projects will just come to you if you have a very good and clean codes and know the latest. Give your client pain-free output especially with design problems.

There's more advantages in learning it than just sitting down working with tables. I myself has stopped working with tables already. I'm not discouraging you from tables, but learn what is new and good.

Learning is fun. It's challenging. I'm not afraid of it. You should not be afraid of it. I learned PHP just by self-studying. So switching from tables to tableless layout is not that bloody compare to PHP.

That's why i'm revamping all my CMS just to switch to CSS layouts. It's fun working on it because you're giving yourself a chance to learn again. Be open for new ideas and trends in web developing because with CSS it will help you also design websites in which has impact when it comes to search engine optimization.

If you want to learn more about Cascading Style Sheets here are some links to site that I recommend:

Save a lot of work with CSS!

In our CSS tutorial you will learn how to use CSS to control the style and layout of multiple Web pages all at once.

http://en.wikipedia.org/wiki/Cascading_Style_Sheets
In web development, Cascading Style Sheets (CSS) is a stylesheet language used to describe the presentation of a document written in a markup language. Its most common application is to style web pages written in HTML and XHTML, but the language can be applied to any kind of XML document, including SVG and XUL.
