WordCamp Philippines 2008

WordCamp PhilippinesAs avid WordPress bloggers and developers know very well, WordCamp is the event when it comes to this “state-of-the-art semantic personal publishing platform”. And we are bringing it to the Philippines!

I normally write about blogging stuff over at Blogie Blog, but this post isn’t about blogging. WordCamp, you see, isn’t like the Mindanao Bloggers Summit or the iBlog Summit. WordCamp’s content is usually more technical in nature. As are many open-source software, this powerful CMS is written in PHP, and so this event will cover plenty of ground on this language, as well as XHTML and other similar topics.

(Doesn’t mean, though, that there won’t be any partying!)

The target audience of WordCamp Philippines will be bloggers, naturally. However, we would like to encourage PHP developers to participate, as well as Web weavers (especially those who are very much into XHTML and CSS) and computer graphics designers.

There will be technical sessions on how to make full use of, and extend, WordPress: these will cover plugins and template development. For the more artistically inclined, there will be presentations and demonstrations on how to create themes for WordPress.

The event will be on 25 October 2008. While it’s true that the core organizers are based in Davao, it has been decided by the group to hold WordCamp Philippines 2008 in Metro Manila. (The actual venue has not yet been decided on.)

Too bad for Dabawenyo PHP coders… Although, I do hope that some of them will be able to make it to the event. Hey, it’s still about 5 months away — time to start saving up for the trip to the capital! ;)

WordCamp Philippines in the works… Watch out for it!

Welcome to my new domain

Monday, March 24th, 2008

I’m really getting good at this…. If you’ve been reading IT talks! since its conception last year, you’d know that I’ve transferred the site (address-wise) twice now. In its infancy, the blog was found at http://ittalkscolumn.blogspot.com. When I started acquiring domains, I put the site under http://ittalks.robilloblog.com, thinking I’d host all my blogs under the robilloblog.com domain. And now, once and for all, my IT column is here to stay: www.ittalks.net.

For those of you who’ve linked to my blog posts, don’t worry — they will still automatically resolve to the correct posts under the new domain. (more…)

Free wordpress.com now gives 3GB storage

Tuesday, January 22nd, 2008
This post is to thank wordpress.com for upgrading the storage of the free wordpress.com accounts. A free wordpress.com account with a free 3GB upgrade! Today, one of those developments comes to fruition — everyone’s free upload space has been increased 60x from 50mb to 3,000mb. To get the same amount of space at our nearest competitor, Typepad, [...]

Houston We Had A Problem

Tuesday, December 18th, 2007

Well, last week I’ve decided to migrate to Wordpress 2.3.1 on a whim. I was too lazy to test it locally so I just crossed my fingers and eyes and pressed the update button.

I never knew the statistics regarding the effectiveness of crossing one’s finger but I’d imagine it being unfavorable since the whole blog went kaboosh. Database handles were changed so a couple of plugins of the Category kind went afoul like ants losing the scent of their trail. I also cannot post anything as well as use my tags plugin since the new version already had one. So after that I got busy with a lot of things but last night I finally manage to conjure some kind of time paradox and froze time long enough to fix my blog.

I am happy to report (to myself) that its all now good. I’ve updated plugins and added new ones (Gotta Catch Em’ All). And it will be business as usual, meaning sporadic posts about irrelevant topics on a Design and Arts blog. God have mercy.
